Story Loreena McKennitt

Née au Canada mais d'origine irlandaise et écossaise, Loreena McKennitt, accompagne sa voix de soprano en jouant de la harpe celtique. Avant de composer sa musique, elle effectue des recherches sur l'histoire, le folklore, la culture du pays qui inspirent le concept de l'album.  Ses textes sont parfois issus d’œuvres littéraires.  Son premier album  Elemental parait en 1985, mais c’est The Visit en 1991 qui la révèle au grand public.  En juillet 1998, son compagnon, son frère et un ami, se noient dans un accident de bateau sur le lac Huron. A la suite de ce drame, elle cesse toute activité musicale... En septembre 2006, elle se produit en concert à l’Alhambra, en Espagne, dont je recommande le coffret (2CD/DVD) paru en 2007, intitulé Nights from the Alhambra.

Story Manfred Mann's Earth Band

Le claviériste Manfred Mann, originaire d’Afrique du Sud,  a débuté dans les années soixante et a connu quelques succès de 1963 à 1968. Il a ensuite formé le Manfred Mann Chapter 3 (69/70), inspiré du jazz fusion, avant de devenir le Manfred Mann's Earth Band à partir de 1971. Basée à Londres, la formation originale est composée de Mick Rogers (guitar, vocals), Manfred Mann (keyboards, moog), Colin Pattenden (bass), Chris Slade (drums). The Earth Band produit un rock mélodique progressif aux influences jazz. Outre leurs propres morceaux, le groupe revitalise des titres d'artistes tels Bob Dylan et Bruce Springsteen.

Story Supertramp + Hodgson

Supertramp, c'est la rencontre en 1970, dans un club londonien d'un millionnaire néerlandais avec Rick Davies (keyboards) et par la suite, Roger Hodgson (guitars). Les 2 premiers albums n'attirent pas un large public. Ils sont rejoints en 1974 par Dougie Thomson (bass), Bob Siebenberg (drums) et John Helliwell (saxophone) pour l’enregistrement de Crime of the Century qui développe le style 'Supertramp', mélange de pop et de musique progressive. Le groupe atteint son apogée commerciale avec Breakfast in America en 1979, qui contient 4 singles imparables.  Après Famous Last Words en 1982, Roger Hodgson quitte le groupe pour une carrière solo, mais Rick Davies poursuit l’aventure Supertramp dans un registre plus jazz. A partir de 1998, Roger Hodgson collabore aux opéras rock celtiques d’Alan Simon.

Blues en Chenin

La 1ére édition de Blues en Chenin a eu lieu en 2004, à l’initiative d’une bande de passionnés, amateurs de blues.  Ce festival, situé au Parc de l’Enclos à St Lambert du Lattay (49) avait pour habitude de nous régaler musicalement chaque dernier samedi du mois d’Août.  Avant les festivités, les organisateurs nous rendaient visite en studio, afin de faire découvrir aux auditeurs d’Harvest, les musiciens à l’affiche.  Malheureusement, après 20 ans d’existence, l'association "Blues en Chenin" tire sa révérence, mettant fin à cet évènement unique.

Pour que cette manifestation conviviale et familiale (que vous avez peut-être vécue) reste dans les mémoires, je vous invite à partager 2 heures de sons entre créativité et reprises, issus d’artistes et groupes (26/65) par ordre de leur participation.

Story Steely Dan + Fagen

Walter Becker et Donald Fagen se sont rencontrés en 1967 au Bard College, dans l'État de New York. Le groupe se forme en 1971, mais le single Dallas ne se vend pas. Cependant, Can't buy a thrill, le 1er  album de Steely Dan en 1972, mélange unique de folk, soul, jazz, arrangements de cuivres et textes subversifs, est un succès critique et commercial.  7 opus paraissent avec la même recette jusqu’en 1980. En 1982, Donald Fagen produit en solo  le très recommandable The Nightfly.  Le groupe se reforme ensuite en 1995 pour une tournée américaine, puis 2 nouveaux disques en 2000 et 2003. En 2017, le décès de Walter Becker se solde par des batailles juridiques et la volonté de perpétuer l’héritage musical.

Cette Story devrait être appréciée par les amateurs de musique ‘Westcoast’… En résumé, ambiance feutrée, harmonies vocales, arrangements de cuivres, solos de saxophone, duo de piano et guitare.

Story Runrig

Nous partons en voyage en Ecosse du coté de l’île de Skye d'où est originaire le groupe de rock celtique, Runrig depuis 1973.  Il comprenait les frères, auteurs-compositeurs, Rory MacDonald (vocal, bass) Calum MacDonald (percussion)  ainsi que Donnie Munro (vocal), Malcolm Jones (guitar), Iain Bayne (drums) et Pete Wishart (keyboards).  En 1997, Donnie Munro décide de poursuivre une carrière politique et sera remplacé par Bruce Guthro.  Au plus fort de leur succès dans les années 1980 et 1990, Runrig était l'un des groupes de langue gaélique les plus célèbres d'Écosse.  En août 2018, Ils font une tournée d'adieu, intitulée The Last Dance, avec un dernier concert au Stirling City Park sous les remparts du château.

Tribute Tony Joe White

Auteur-compositeur-interprète, originaire de Louisiane, Tony Joe White est connu pour son tube de 1969, Polk Salad Annie, popularisé par Elvis Presley, puis Steamy Windows en 1989 pour Tina Turner.  Billy Swan (I can help) est son producteur sur ses 3 premiers opus (1968-1970). Malgré quelques hits aux USA, il a une carrière assez discrète jusqu’en 1980.  En 1983, il revient avec l’album Dangerous, qui bénéficie de la télé diffusion.  Mais c’est le superbe Closer to the Truth en 1991, qui le remet sous les projecteurs en Europe. Les albums suivants sont aussi acclamés par les critiques.  Dans les années 1990, il fait une tournée en Allemagne et en France avec Joe Cocker et Eric Clapton.  Sa flamme s’est éteinte le 24 octobre 2018, il avait 75 ans. L'album posthume Smoke from the Chimney parait en 2021.

La reconstitution de carrière du 'Swamp Fox' est proposée dans ce recueil chronologique de 29 titres, mélange de blues, rock, country, boogie et zydeco...  Tout est bon !

Tribute John Mayall

John Mayall, chanteur, guitariste, harmoniciste et claviériste, né à Manchester en 1933, forme The Bluesbreakers en 1965. Ce groupe compte parmi ses membres des guitaristes qui deviendront célèbres : Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Jon Mark, Harvey Mandel.  Au début des années 1970, Mayall déménage aux États-Unis où il enregistre avec des musiciens locaux pour divers labels. Il reforme les Bluesbreakers en 1984 avec Walter Trout, Coco Montoya, puis Buddy Whittington. À 90 ans et plus de 60 albums officiels, il était le musicien le plus âgé et influent du blues anglais. Il nous a quitté le 22 juillet 2024.

Le programme joint propose un survol de sa production de 1965 à 1988. Un hommage mérité à celui que l’on surnomme désormais  le ‘Pape du British blues’.

Tribute Van Morrison

Van Morrison, né en 1945 en Irlande du Nord, a commencé très jeune, jouant de l'harmonica, des claviers et du saxophone, avec des groupes irlandais. Au début des années 60, il devient le chanteur du groupe de Belfast Them, où il s’impose comme le principal compositeur (Gloria), parmi les reprises de standards de blues.  Sa carrière solo commence sous la direction de Bert Berns avec la sortie du single Brown Eyed Girl en 1967. L’inspiration de ‘Van the Man’ puise dans la musique soul, rhythm & blues, celtique et jazz. Il a reçu plusieurs prix musicaux majeurs au cours de sa carrière.

Tribute Calvin Russell

En 1989, Patrick Mathé, le patron du label français New Rose remarque Calvin Russell, vagabond marginal, qui chante et joue de la guitare dans un club local à Austin. Celui-ci lui laisse une cassette de ses compositions.  C'est cette maquette qui donne naissance à l'album A Crack In Time que l’on découvre en 1990. L’accueil est tell que Calvin doit venir en France pour en assurer la promotion. L’année suivante, il sort Sounds From The Fourth World, non moins excellent.  Fort de ses succès, il commence à se produire dans l’hexagone, remplissant les clubs, alors qu'au Texas il est toujours ignoré…

Story John Hiatt

Originaire de l’indiana, John Hiatt (prononcez Aîe-Hate) déménage à Nashville, à 18 ans et obtiens un emploi d'auteur compositeur. Après s’être produit dans de nombreux clubs du Tennessee, il sort un 1er opus chez ‘Epic’ en 1974, Hangin' Around the Observatory, qui est un échec commercial.  Le succès n’arrive qu’à partir de 1983 pour Riding With the King, et en 1987 l’album Bring the Family connait la consécration.  Plusieurs de ses compositions seront popularisés par de nombreux artistes dont Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Aaron Neville, Delbert McClinton, Carl Perkins, Buddy Guy, Bob Seger, Linda Ronstadt, Jeff Healey, etc…

Story Paul Personne

Natif d’Argenteuil, il participe à plusieurs formations dans les années 70 parmi lesquelles, La Folle Entreprise, Bracos Band et Backstage.  Un 1er album solo éponyme en 1982 ne donne pas lieu à suite par le label. Il persiste avec 3 albums successifs dont Barjoland, qui lui assure une petite notoriété dans le milieu blues français.  Sa carrière décolle en 1989, avec le disque La Chance  qui lui permet d'enchaîner les concerts.  La reconnaissance du grand public arrive en 1992, avec Comme à La Maison, et se confirme avec Rêve Sidéral d'Un Naîf Idéal en 1994 puis Instantanés en 1996, auquel participe Jean-Louis Aubert.

Story Hubert-Félix Thiéfaine.

Né à Dole dans le Jura, il monte sur Paris en 1971, où il se produit dans des petits cabarets parisiens, puis à partir de 1976, en concert avec le groupe Machin, associé à Tony Carbonare… Janvier 1978, il sort son 1er album, Tout Corps Vivant Branché sur le Secteur  sur lequel figure La Fille du Coupeur de Joints, diffusé en radio. En 1981, le 4ème album  Dernières Balises , plus rock, arrangé par Claude Mairet, marque un tournant dans sa carrière. Le suivant Soleil Cherche Futur confirme le succès. Il collabore avec Paul personne en 2007 pour l’excellent Amicalement Blues.

Voici 26 titres très accrocheurs, de cet artiste peu médiatisé, mais dont les albums sont disques d'or et les concerts toujours complets. J’espère que cette sélection séduira également les non coutumiers du délire verbal de HFT.

Tribute Peter Green

Après un passage dans les Bluesbreakers de John Mayall, ce londonien, guitariste auteur/compositeur, fonde Fleetwood Mac en 1967, avec Mick Fleetwood, Jeremy Spencer et John McVie. Malheureusement, ses obsessions associées à sa consommation de drogue provoquent une schizophrénie. En 1970, Il est interné et doit subir une thérapie l’obligeant à quitter le groupe.  1979, avec l'aide de son frère Michael, il signe avec le label PVK et produit une série d'albums solo qui débute par In The Skies. 6 albums paraissent ainsi jusqu’en 1985, définissant son style swing blues cool.  Après une nouvelle période d’addiction, il revient en 1997, avec le Splinter Group, en compagnie de Nigel Watson et Cozy Powell. Le groupe réalise ainsi 8 opus, dont 2 en hommage à Robert Johnson.  Peter Green disparait le 25 juillet 2020 à l'âge de 73 ans.

Story Fleetwood Mac

Ce groupe, à l’origine Blues/Rock, se forme à Londres en 1967, avec le guitariste Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood, Jeremy Spencer et John McVie.  Danny Kirwan les rejoint en 1968.  Peu après le départ de Peter Green en mai 1970, Christine Perfect épouse John McVie et intègre le groupe.  Spencer et Kirwan quittent le navire en 1972, remplacé respectivement jusqu’en 1974 par Bob Welch et Bob Weston.  En décembre 74, alors que Mick Fleetwood cherche un studio à Los Angeles, il entend le duo américain Lindsey Buckingham et Stevie Nicks.  A la demande du batteur, Buckingham accepte de rejoindre Fleetwood Mac, à condition que Nicks soit également de la partie. Grace à eux, le succès commercial arrive en 1975, et en 1977 l’album Rumours va rester n° 1 des Charts américains pendant 31 semaines... Christine McVie a succombé à un AVC  le 30 novembre 2022, à l'âge de 79 ans. 

Cette partition Pop/Rock de 2 heures, qui  commence en 1970, ne concerne pas la période blues du début... Peter Green fait l’objet d’un programme avec le groupe (1967/1969) en solo (1979/1985) et avec le Splinter Group (1997/2003).

Story Firefall

Firefall est formé au Colorado en 1974 par Rick Roberts (ex Flying Burrito Bros), Jock Bartley, Michael Clarke (ex Byrds), Mark Andes et Larry Burnett.  Le 1er album est enregistré en avril 1976. Le 3ème opus Elan contient l’excellent single Strange Way... Après une séparation en 1983,  Jock Bartley reforme le groupe en 1994 pour l'album Messenger puis en... 2020 pour Comet.

Dans l’ombre d’Eagles et Poco, ce groupe Country rock, subtilement enrichi du flutiste/saxophoniste David Muse, me semblait digne de faire l’objet d’une ‘story’.

Tribute Emmylou Harris

Originaire d’Alabama, la demoiselle s'installe à New York dans les années 1960, et enregistre un 1er album folk Gliding Bird en 1969… En 1972, elle rencontre Gram Parsons qui lui propose de collaborer pour des duos et harmonies vocales. Après sa mort en septembre 1973, elle décide de poursuivre l’héritage country rock, et obtient un contrat d'enregistrement avec Warner, pour son 2ème opus  Pieces of the Sky, paru en 1975.  Par la suite, la plupart des albums d’Emmylou Harris seront des succès commerciaux.  En 1995, Wrecking Ball, produit par Daniel Lanois, est un petit bijou ‘Americana’ intimiste.

Tribute James Taylor

Originaire de Boston, dans le Massachusetts, cet excellent guitariste est une institution aux USA. Pourtant son 1er opus solo a été produit en Angleterre, sur le label 'Apple' des Beatles, en 1968. C’est le second Sweet Baby James qui lui permettra d’acquérir succès et notoriété en qualité d'auteur-compositeur-interprète.  Depuis, il a vendu plus de 100 millions de disques dans le monde, et  a donné une série de concerts gratuits en 2008, pour soutenir la candidature de Barack Obama.

Story Dire Straits + Knopfler

En 1977, Mark Knopfler (lead guitar), David Knopfler (rythmic guitar), John Illsley (bass) et Pick Withers (drums), enregistrent des démos diffusés sur BBC Radio London. 1978, le 1er opus éponyme Dire Straits connait un succès immédiat avec le tube Sultans of Swing.... David quitte le groupe pendant l’enregistrement du 3ème album, mais son 1er solo, Release ne parait qu’en 1983. Il en produira 13 à ce jour… Mark, guitariste surdoué, célèbre pour son ‘fingerstyle’ , compose en parallèle des musiques de films.  1985, Brothers in Arms sera l'un des albums le plus vendu au monde.  Après avoir mis un terme au groupe en 1993, Mark Knopfler sort son 1er disque solo en 1996, Golden Heart.

Tribute Chris Rea

De père italien et mère irlandaise, cet anglais est connu pour sa voix grave et son jeu de guitare slide. Il a enregistré 26 albums studio. Le succès arrive en Europe avec le 5ème et le single I Can Hear Your Heartbeat. Sa renommée internationale s’accroît avec les albums On The Beach (1986), Dancing with Strangers (1987) et The Road to Hell (1989). A l’aube des années 2000,  la musique de Chris Rea évolue vers un style plus folk blues. 2005 a vu la sortie de Blue Guitars, un coffret de 11 CD contenant 137 titres inspirés du blues, illustré avec ses peintures.

Story Alan Parsons Project

Ingénieur du son à 'Abbey Road' sur les albums des Beatles et Pink Floyd, Alan Parsons rencontre Eric Woolfson à l'été 1974. Leur collaboration donne naissance à The Alan Parsons Project et le 1er album parait en juin 1976.  Pyramid (1978), The Turn of a Friendly Card (1980), Eye in the Sky (1982) sont de superbes réussites dans le style Pop progressif/symphonique. A partir de 1993, Alan Parsons publiera sous son nom.

Voici 26 compositions, parfois accompagnées d’un orchestre symphonique sous la direction d’Andrew Powell. A noter que les tâches vocales sont souvent partagées par des invités. Chris Rainbow, Lenny Zakatek, John Miles, David Paton et Colin Blunstone sont des habitués.

Story America

Formé à Londres à la fin des années 60, par des américains, Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek et Gerry Beckley, le trio est célèbre pour ses harmonies vocales et son folk acoustique.  En 1971, le 1er opus d'America contient le tube A Horse With No Name. Cette notoriété leur permet de produire annuellement d’excellents albums durant les seventies. Le second grand succès commercial interviendra en 1982 avec le single You Can Do Magic.

Tribute Jesse Colin Young

Originaire de New York, Jesse Colin Young réalise son 1er enregistrement en 4 heures, The Soul of a City Boy, en 1964. Après un 2ème opus solo, il forme son groupe The YoungBloods en 1966, pour 5 albums jusqu’à 1972. Il entamera ensuite une nouvelle carrière solo, dans un style folk parfois boogie, enrichi par l’étonnant flutiste et saxophoniste Jim Rothermel. Il connaitra plusieurs succès aux USA, notamment Song for Juli en 1973. Jesse Colin Young disparait le 16 mars 2025 à 83 ans.

Originaire de l’Ontario, au Canada, Gordon Lightfoot signe un contrat en 1965 avec Albert Grossman et United Artists. 1966 marque la sortie de son premier opus Lightfoot!, dans lequel il s’affirme en qualité d’auteur-compositeur-interprète, dans un registre folk acoustique. Au fil des albums, sa notoriété se propage en Amérique du Nord, où il acquiert la reconnaissance de ses pairs, (Dylan, Cohen, Young)

Story Marillion

Formé à la fin des années ’70, Marillion est considéré comme le précurseur du rock néo-progressif britannique. Le groupe produit son 1er album Script for a Jester's Tear, en 1983. Il se caractérise par les textes, la voix et la prestation scénique du chanteur Fish, présent jusqu’en 1988...  A partir de 1989, son successeur, Steve Hogarth, moins charismatique, s'impose néanmoins tant sur album que sur scène grâce à un registre vocal plus étendu.

Tribute Steve Forbert

Auteur-compositeur, guitariste et harmoniciste, de Meridian au Mississippi, Steve Forbert déménage à New York à 17 ans, en 1976, pour jouer dans les rues de Greenwich Village. En 1978, il sort son premier album Alive on Arrival. 3 nouveaux disques suivront, mais un désaccord avec son label 'Nemperor' l’empêchera de produire jusqu’en 1988. L’album Down in Flames enregistré en 1983 ne sera publié qu’en 2009.

Story John Mellencamp

Songwriter, originaire de l’Indiana, il sort son 1er album en 1976, sous le nom de Johnny Cougar. Il enregistre Uh-Huh en 1983 en ajoutant son véritable nom, Mellencamp. En 1985, il signe le formidable opus, Scarecrow, et fonde Farm Aid avec Willie Nelson et Neil Young, festival caritatif destiné à collecter des fonds en faveur des fermiers américains en difficulté. The Lonesome Jubilee en 1987 est une véritable pépite.

Tribute Linda Ronstadt

3 albums avec The Stone Poneys, de 1967 à 1968, et la native de Tucson fait paraitre son 1er opus solo en 1969 chez Capitol.  A l’occasion de son 3ème album éponyme, elle s’entoure, entre autres, des futurs membres d’Eagles, Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon et Randy Meisner qui l’accompagneront en tournée. Après des incursions dans les standards de jazz et le Mariachi mexicain, elle a également collaboré avec Emmylou Harris et Dolly Parton en 1987 et 1999.

Story Eagles

Après avoir accompagné Linda Ronstadt, le groupe se forme en 1971, et publie son premier album en 1972. 5 autres albums studio suivront jusqu‘en 1979, parmi lesquels l’incontournable  Hotel California. Le groupe se sépare en 1980, mais se reformera en 1994. Entre temps, les membres ne restent pas inactifs et produisent leurs propres albums solos.

Tribute Jackson Browne

Auteur-compositeur précoce en écrivant des chansons pour les autres, Jackson Browne ne sort son 1er album qu’en 1972. Son 3eme, Late for the Sky (1974), connaît un large succès. En 1977, Running on Empty, son œuvre phare à la fois live et conceptuel, explore les thèmes de la vie de musicien en tournée.  Activiste militant, il se produit fréquemment lors de concerts caritatifs, notamment  Muse, Farm Aid, Amnesty International… En 2002, il reçoit le prix John Steinbeck décerné aux artistes qui illustrent les valeurs environnementales et sociales.

Story Carlos Santana

Santana (le groupe) précurseur du Rock salsa et du Jazz rock, se forme à San Francisco en 1966 à l’initiative du guitariste Carlos Santana. Révélé à Woodstock en aout 1969, leur prestation scénique avec un jeune batteur de 20 ans, Michael Shrieve, a accru leur notoriété. Après un changement de formation et de direction musicale en 1972, le groupe expérimente des éléments de jazz fusion. En 1999, Santana atteint un nouveau sommet de succès critique et commercial avec Supernatural.

Story Pink Floyd

Du psychédélisme expérimental à la musique planante, leurs albums-concept des années ’70 seront les précurseurs du rock progressif. David Gilmour rejoint le groupe en janvier 1968, afin d'épauler sur scène Syd Barrett, dont le comportement devient de plus en plus erratique. En avril 1968, il le remplace définitivement. En 1973, Pink Floyd acquiert une célébrité mondiale avec The Dark Side of the Moon... Roger Waters quitte le groupe en 1985.  En 1987, David Gilmour, Nick Mason et Richard Wright décident de continuer sous la bannière Pink Floyd.  En septembre 2008, 2 ans après la mort de Syd Barrett, un autre membre fondateur, le claviériste Richard Wright est emporté par un cancer, à 65 ans.

Story Al Stewart

Cet écossais a écumé les clubs folks londoniens dès l’âge de 19 ans. En 1967, ses chansons confessionnelles et introspectives sont éditées sur Bed-Sitter Images qui restera confidentiel.  Il fait parti de l'ère du renouveau folk et participe au premier festival de Glastonbury de 1970.  Al Stewart connait enfin le succès avec l’album et single Year of the Cat en 1976, puis Time Passages en 1978, produits tous deux par Alan Parsons. En 1980, l’excellent 24 Carrots est réalisé avec Peter White qui collabore jusqu’en 1993.

Les amateurs de folk revivaliste apprécieront certainement cette Story of the Cat, subtil et délicat cinéma sonore allant de 1967 à 2008.

Story Poco

Ce groupe de country rock américain se forme en 1968 à la suite de la dissolution du Buffalo Springfield,  avec les guitaristes Richie Furay et Jim Messina (remplacé par Paul Cotton en 1970), le multi-instrumentiste Rusty Young, le bassiste Randy Meisner (puis Timothy B. Schmit), et le batteur George Grantham. Leur premier opus de 1969, Pickin' Up the Pieces est considéré comme un album pionnier du country rock… Malheureusement, Rusty Young et Paul Cotton nous ont quittés en 2021, actant ainsi la fin de Poco.

Après 2 groupes assez discrets, The Epics et Mudcrutch, il forme Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers avec un 1er album en 1976.  Le 4ème opus Hard Promises en 1981 est disque de platine avec un premier duo avec Stevie Nicks.  En 1988, Il participe au supergroupe Traveling Wilburys avec Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison et Jeff Lynne.  Into the Great Wide Open en 1991 et Wildflowers en 1994 rencontrent également un beau succès.  Originaire de Floride, Tom Petty est parti trop tôt en 2017. Il avait 66 ans.

Story Elliott Murphy

Nul n'est prophète en son pays… Elliott Murphy enregistre en 1973 chez Polydor son premier opus, Aquashow. Dans le même esprit Folk Rock paraitront les excellents Lost Generation (1975), Night Lights (1976) puis Just a Story From America (1977)… Malheureusement, le public américain semblant peu réceptif, le natif de New York s’expatrie à Paris en 1989. Il y vit depuis… Il est rejoint en 1996 par le guitariste français Olivier Durand (ex.Little Bob Story).  Une trentaine d’albums (studio) plus tard et un nombre impressionnant de concerts, il fait l’objet d’un véritable culte dans l’hexagone.

Tribute Dan Fogelberg

Dan Fogelberg,  compositeur, musicien autodidacte, sort son 1er album Home Free, dans un registre country folk, en 1972. Il connait le succès avec les albums Phoenix en 1979 et l’ambitieux double The Innocent Age en 1981.  Au total, il produit 15 opus studio, dont 2 en collaboration avec le flûtiste de jazz Tim Weisberg… Originaire de l’Illinois, Dan Fogelberg a succombé à la maladie en 2007, à seulement 56 ans.

Ce portrait musical permet de découvrir cet artiste, célébré aux USA, mais dont  la notoriété n’est pas parvenue sur notre continent... C’est réparé !

Story Chris DeBurgh

Né en Argentine et domicilié en Irlande, Chris DeBurgh signe avec le label A&M en 1974. Après 3 albums folk/soft confidentiels, il publie les excellents Crusader (1979) et Eastern wind (1980) dans un registre pop mélodique. En parallèle, il construit sa popularité en 1ère partie de Supertramp. Le véritable succès arrive à partir de 1982 avec The Getaway.  A ce jour, Il a vendu plus de 45 millions d'albums dans le monde.

Tribute JJ Cale

Le natif de Tulsa (Oklahoma), bricole son propre studio  et enregistre quelques titres sans succès dans les années ’60… jusqu’à ce qu’Eric Clapton reprenne une de ses anciennes compositions, After Midnight sur son 1er album solo de 1970. Naturally, sorti en octobre 1971 établit le style JJ Cale, caractérisé par un groove nonchalant, une guitare fluide et un timbre rocailleux… Call Me the Breeze qui ouvre l’album sera aussi repris et popularisé par Lynyrd Skynyrd.  L'album Troubadour de 1976 comprend Cocaine qui sera un nouveau succès pour Eric Clapton. Tous ces droits d’auteurs lui permettent de poursuivre une carrière sans compromissions.

JJ Cale, disparu en juillet 2013, nous a laissé un témoignage musical original qui pourrait se résumer dans ce programme Laidback.

Story The Police + Sting

Formé à Londres en 1977 par Sting (vocal, bass), Andy Summers (guitar) et Stewart Copeland (drums),  le 1er album de 1978, Outlandos d'Amour, contient les singles Roxanne et Can't Stand Losing You. Le 2ème  Reggatta de Blanc en 1979, sera également un succès avec Message in a Bottle et Walking on the Moon… Après 5 albums, le groupe se sépare en 1984, et Sting se lance dans une carrière solo dans un registre plus jazzy.  Militant pour les droits de l'homme, défenseur de l'environnement, il fait valoir ses opinions avec des chansons engagées, en fondant une association écologique et en finançant des ONG…

Tribute Gérard Manset

Gérard Manset grandit à Saint-Cloud, en banlieue parisienne. Après s’être consacré aux arts décoratifs, Il commence à jouer de la guitare et écrit des chansons. Refusé par plusieurs maisons de disques, il décide en 1968 de produire lui-même son 1er 45 tours, Animal On Est Mal. En 1975, le titre Il Voyage en Solitaire lui apporte un succès dérangeant… Préférant la discrétion, il ne souhaite pas se produire en public. Inspiré par ses voyages en Asie et Amérique latine, son approche de la musique est un recueil de mysticisme, exotisme et nostalgie.

Tribute Bill Deraime

Après une période d’exposition médiatique (Plus la Peine de Frimer 1980, Babylone Tu Déconnes 1981), Cet auteur compositeur interprète, originaire de Picardie, poursuit une carrière beaucoup plus discrète. Il continue néanmoins de sortir régulièrement des albums qui témoignent de ses influences, blues et reggae. Les reprises et réinterprétations de ses anciennes chansons permettent de palier à l’indisponibilité de ses premiers albums.

Tribute Steve Winwood

Chanteur, compositeur et multi-instrumentiste, il a 15 ans lorsqu’il devient membre du Spencer Davis Group (1964-1967). Il forme ensuite Traffic (1967-1974) ) avec Dave Mason, Jim Capaldi et Chris Wood, puis Blind Faith (1969) avec Eric Clapton. Il se lance en solo en 1977 et réalise une dizaine d’albums. Un nouvel album de Traffic parait néanmoins en 1994... En février 2009, Eric Clapton et Steve Winwood donneront un concert au Madison Square Garden, à New York.

L’actuel leader et fil rouge de ce groupe s’appelle Andy Powell, recruté avec Ted Turner, en 1969 par Martin Turner et Steve Upton, suite à une annonce dans le Melody Maker.… Les 2 faisant l’affaire en qualité de guitaristes solistes, le groupe se fait une réputation grâce à sa technique de " twin-guitarists" . Le 1er album éponyme parait en 1970. En 2020, on estime 28 albums studio, et on ne compte pas les Lives et les Bests ; le total pourrait dépasser les 90 !

Story Barclay James Harvest

Après 4 albums confidentiels chez 'EMI' de 1970 à 1972, le groupe britannique change de label pour 'Polydor'. La récompense arrive en 1974 grâce au savoureux mélange "harmonie, guitare, mellotron". Le succès, surtout en Europe se poursuit jusqu’en 1993. Malheureusement un désaccord entre les 2 leaders, John Lees et Les Holroyd provoque une scission en 1997. Chose rare, Barclay James Harvest fusionne en conservant le même nom mais avec 2 entités différentes : BJH through the Eyes of John Lees et BJH featuring Les Holroyd…

Story Bernard Lavilliers

Dés son plus jeune âge, le Stéphanois a la passion des rythmes tropicaux, le jazz sud américain et la poésie. La révélation s’opère en 1976 avec l’engagé Les Barbares, succès confirmé 1 an plus tard par 15ème Round... 1979, il part de Saint-Malo, en bateau, pour la Jamaïque, puis New York et le Brésil. Il revient en France avec l'album de la consécration, O Gringo. Le triple Live Tour 80 de la tournée est exceptionnel. Très investi et actif en faveur des causes sociales, il annonce voter pour Jean-Luc Mélenchon à l'élection présidentielle de mars 2022... Nobody is perfect !

Story Jean Patrick Capdevielle

Avant d'être chanteur, le natif de Levallois-Perret était journaliste. Dans les années 1960, il voyage aux États-Unis, puis vit à Londres avant de s'établir aux Baléares, à Ibiza. En août 1979, il sort son 1er disque 33tr, Les Enfants des Ténèbres et les Anges de la Rue.  Quand T'es Dans le Désert est le titre Radio. Malgré des critiques injustifiées, les albums suivants Capdevielle 2 (1980) et Le Long de la Jetée (1981) sont, selon moi, tout aussi bons. Les amateurs de Springsteen ne s’y tromperont pas !... La qualité baissera néanmoins à partir de 1984.

Tribute Bob Marley

Originaire de la Jamaïque,  Bob Marley est considéré comme l'un des pionniers du reggae. Sa carrière a commencé en 1963 avec Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Carlton et Aston Barrett, qui deviendront les Wailers.  En 1972, Le groupe se lance dans une tournée au Royaume-Uni avec le chanteur Johnny Nash. Pendant leur séjour à Londres, les Wailers rencontrent Chris Blackwell du label Island.  Suite à l’échec commercial de l’album Catch a fire, Peter Tosh et Bunny Wailer décident de  retourner à la Jamaïque. Malgré la séparation, Bob Marley continue d'enregistrer sous le nom de Bob Marley & The Wailers avec les frères Barrett, Junior Marvin, Al Anderson et  les choristes I Threes. C’est la reprise d’Eric Clapton I shot the sheriff, en 1974, qui déclenchera le succès…

Bob Marley nous a quitté le 11 mai 1981, à 36 ans. Devenu une légende de son vivant, et un mythe après sa mort, Il aura fait connaître le mouvement rastafari et la musique jamaïcaine au monde entier. Cette sélection de 1966 à 1983, lui rend hommage.

Story Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen, originaire du New Jersey, sort ses 2 premiers albums en 1973, avec son groupe E Street Band. Ceux-ci, bien accueillis par la critique, ne lui attirent pas un large public. Son 3ème opus  Born to Run en 1975, résolument plus rock lui amène un succès qui sera confirmé par Darkness on the Edge of Town (1978) et The River (1980). Après un album solo acoustique, il enregistre le très commercial Born in the USA en 1984 qui contient pas moins de 7 singles. En 1988, il participe à la tournée mondiale Human Rights Now! pour Amnesty International. Il remporte un Oscar en 1994 pour sa chanson Streets of Philadelphia puis produit son 2ème album folk, The Ghost of Tom Joad inspiré des ‘Raisins de la Colère’ de John Steinbeck.

Pour toutes ces raisons, je propose de faire un rappel de l’œuvre du Boss de 1973 à 1996. S’il a soutenu la campagne présidentielle de Barack Obama en 2008, il n’a pas hésité à qualifier Trump de malade mental…  C'est malheureusement confirmé.

Tribute Eric Clapton

Eric Clapton puise son inspiration dans le blues américain. Dés 1964, il rejoint les Yardbirds. Mars 1965, John Mayall lui propose de rejoindre son groupe, les Bluesbreakers. 1966, Cream voit le jour, avec Ginger Baker et Jack Bruce. Après 4 albums, le groupe se sépare en 1969. Clapton fonde alors l’éphémère Blind Faith avec Steve Winwood. En 1970, il réalise enfin son 1er album solo. Cette même année, il crée un nouveau groupe avec le guitariste Duane Allman sous le nom Derek And The Dominos... Après une période douloureuse d’addiction à la drogue et l’alcool, Eric Clapton sort du tunnel en 1974 avec un 2ème opus, 461 Ocean Boulevard. Ce sera le début de sa carrière solo.

Rétrospective 1981

En 1981, la fin du monopole d’état en matière de radio diffusion a vu la libéralisation des médias sonores, autorisant ainsi les nouvelles stations FM d’émettre au grand jour.  Créée en octobre 1981 à Angers,  Radio G! est toujours une radio associative. Elle fut connue sous le nom de Radio Gribouille jusqu’en mai 2000.

1982 – 1985 –  ROCK BALLADS

Suite à l’élection de François Mitterrand en mai 1981, ‘Radio Gribouille’ naît spontanément à Angers de la détermination et de l’imagination d’une bande de copains, avec Jacques (The Beer) et Gérard (Fred) toujours actif. En octobre 1982, Gilles (Belou) arrive sur Angers et découvre la radio grâce à Pascal (Calou) un collègue de travail, qui participait à l’aventure. Au début, Il fait des ‘techniques’ d’émissions puis s’investit au sein du conseil d’administration. Fin 1983, il crée sa première émission hebdomadaire, ROCKIN’ CHAIR (pop, folk, rock) qui fait suite à celle de son copain Calou, RECREATION (chanson française et jazz). Chacun assurant la technique de l’émission de l’autre.

En 1984, suite à la défection de son compère, il reprend le créneau des deux heures pour créer ROCK BALLADS. Dans le prolongement, il poursuit la soirée en participant, en qualité de technicien, aux délires d’AUX DELICES DU CALICE, une émission animée, en partie, par les membres fondateurs de la radio. En 1985, il assure en parallèle PLAN ROCK, hebdomadaire sur une autre radio locale, avec un gars du sud-ouest comme lui : Christian (Bertou).

1986 – 1999 -  TRAFFIC

Fin 1986, Belou propose l’émission TRAFFIC. Seul à l’origine, il est rejoint en 1987 par Bruno (Mygale) puis en 1988 par les deux beaux frères, Bruno (Pépère) et Rémi (Rému). L’aventure dure 5 ans et les 4 lascars s’affublent, par autodérision, de surnoms improbables tels Léon, Marcel, Robert et Eugène. 1993, Mygale quitte le navire pour créer ALBATROS, sa propre émission de chansons françaises et de poèmes. Elle devient ensuite ROUTES NOMADES en se focalisant sur la nouvelle chanson française mais également sur le jazz et la world music.

1997, l’épisode s’achève pour Belou, fâché par la gestion et les combines du Président de l’époque.  Pépère souhaite néanmoins perpétuer TRAFFIC. Il sera ensuite rejoint par Philippe (Scooter). Mais certains avaient tiré le signal d’alarme et les résultats financiers sont effectivement dans le rouge. Fin 1998, la radio, qui se trouve en cessation de paiement, est mise en redressement judiciaire. Exit l’ancien Président, une nouvelle équipe se charge de construire un plan de redressement. En avril 1999, le tribunal prononce la mise en liquidation judiciaire de Radio Gribouille.

2000 – 2025 -  HARVEST

En mai 2000, sous réserve d’épuration de la dette, le CSA accepte un changement de nom. 2001, Gribouille, qui célèbre ses 20 ans d’existence, devient RADIO G!  Dès le mois de septembre, Belou et Rému présentent HARVEST, le jeudi de 22 heures à minuit, tandis que TRAFFIC sévit toujours le mercredi à 21h. 2005, Scooter, pour des raisons professionnelles, abandonne mais Pépère assure la prolongation.  Novembre 2006, La Radio fête ses 25 ans en grande pompe et TRAFFIC ses 20… Juin 2007, l’aventure TRAFFIC se termine par jet de l’éponge de Pépère. HARVEST se propose d’être sa nouvelle famille d’accueil et le promulgue au grade de Sergent: il devient donc Sgt Pépère.
